We woke to our usual bright and early, at least an hour before coffee was on at Half Moon. Finally rolled out and were offered coffee from the neighbours, who had scronged a coffee maker somehow. Did our breakfast at Cindy's, which I quite liked with the ham, cheese and egg thingie wrapped in dough and deep fried. Eileen had an island breakfast which was a couple of tortillo breads with refried beans, egg, and other stuffings. Five bucks each. Cindy's is basically a shack about the size of a city slicker tool shed, window in the front, a couple of plastic tables bordering Main Street West End, Cindy cooking and one helper serving. Great place for people viewing as they strolled by.
Finished eating, walked back to Half Moon, packed up, and then walked back into town to get some veges/fruit from the trucks. No trucks to be found. Saturday is a slow day. Ran into a guy (Steve) who saw my golf hat and he started a conversation. He owns a paddleboard place in West End, and we rode out in a van with him a few years ago to a charity event. His business is right next to Sundowners bar which is right next to the radio station (more on that later) and is tied in with a dive shop......the divemaster at the shop is also a big golfer,,,,he mentioned something about friends deals at the golf course (we might go twice). Might be worth the parking expense at West End to dive with them and get them to book our golf.... Will find out tomorrow. Packed suitcases,loaded the car, paid the bill, and headed to the bakery. No bread until Monday. Side trip to West Bay to alternate bakery. Not open yet. Screw it, we'll hit the house. Found the place with no problem, had small issue with the lock box but soon had the key and we're in. Nice place. Big high ceilings, well stocked kitchen, nice beds, screens on the deck doors (not common), and tons of room. Pictures of the view on the website are a bit slight of hand though. Not that it really matters as we still have ocean view and are up high in the breeze. A calm afternoon might be tough as the sun is gonna be coming straight in, but that is gonna be the case anywhere here.Couple of views from the deck;
Not bad getting down to the beach, there is a common stairway that all the orchid residents use. A few steps to climb but we knew that going in. Several double kayaks on the beach too. Will be great to try and get out to the reef. We all need to practice the kayak re-entry in deep water though...
Got unpacked and headed out for lunch and groceries. Went the West End road thinking we'd stop for a second look at vege trucks. Piulled into the parking lot (now a paid lot) and right behind us was a vege truck that looked like he was just turning around or something. Loaded up with his produce, paid our dollar for parking, and headed for lunch. Decided to do Blue Bahia because we both like it and we are probably going to take in-laws there in a few days. Just as I hit the turn signals to go into BB, I see a sign for Mayoka Lodge. That is the resort that I do not know the location, but their restaurant is on my short list of places to try. We tuned in, parked, and found the entrance. Got up to their main level and OMG what a view. There was one person working and we asked her about the restaurant. She told us that they do not do lunches anymore. Bummer.....Side story; I had just said earlier in the day that I had not seen the couple that owned the radio station. We have lost touch with our friend Gennie, and if anyone knew if she was going to be in Roatan then it would be her. Well this woman who greeted us was the radio couple. She knew us as Gennies friends but she too has lost touch with her. I'm gonna have to track her down through her Dad, who recently retired from Cameco and lives in Battleford. End of the lunch story, we walked through the Mayoka property which is gorgeous and then went a few hundred feet to our original destination Eileen had a burger and i had a smoked brisket sandwich. We knew better than to order the onion rings with just two of us there. Great lunch. We'll do the rings when there are four of us.
Up to Coxen Hole, $150 bucks for groceries then we ventured through the heart of the town looking for my fish guy. Didn't spot him, so circled bck around and went by the cruise docks so that we could get a better idea of parking when I pick up the in laws. I know that it is kaos down there but it did look pretty easy.
Election year comong up here, so half of the road to Flowers Bay is concrete. Working on completion then the stretch to West End is next. What a great surface is was while it lasted. When it ended it was aweful....Speaing of roads, it was amusing to see the workers today on the road beteen West End and West Bay. The road has hundreds of nasty potholes and there were several crews trying to fix them. They would go into the bush, fill a five gallon pail with sandy clay, dump it in the pothole, and then tamp it down by hand. The roadway hazard markers (there are curves every hundred feet) were piles of the same sandy clay with a stick in it and a pop bottle on top. One of the young workers signalled us for water, but we had none. Wished we could have helped.
Spent the afternoon rather lazy. Several beer, bottle of wine and some music. Failed miserabley with the charcoal bbq. could barely burn my finger on the grate. Finished the meat in a fry pan (2 hours later) poured a rum and worked on the blog....All in all it was a very delightful day, tomorrow will be even better. The weather today was awesome and the forecast is for much of the same.
